Red Beach: Santorini's Most Dramatic Natural Wonder

Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia) is unlike any other beach in Greece — and unlike almost any other beach on Earth. Towering 300-metre cliffs of deep crimson and ochre volcanic rock frame a small cove of dark pebbles and sand, the intense colours created by the iron-rich minerals in Santorini's volcanic geology. The result is a landscape so vivid and alien that it feels more like a scene from another planet than a Mediterranean beach.

Access is via a 10-minute coastal path from Akrotiri, one of the world's most important Bronze Age archaeological sites (also worth visiting). The path requires careful footing — it passes beneath unstable cliff sections, and rockfalls do occur. The beach itself is small and often crowded in summer; arriving early is essential to secure space. Water taxis from Akrotiri's small port offer an easier (and safer) alternative.
